About Donegal ...Donegal located in the north western most tip of Ireland offers plenty for any visitor with sandy beaches, sugared mountains, chattering streams and silent valleys. Too numerous to mention are the host of activities that can be undertaken, just some of which include: golfing, fishing, horse riding, surfing and walking. The area is alive with local festivals, events, traditional music and general nightlife. The pubs are lively and the local restaurants serve only the best cuisine using local produce and of course the seafood is a speciality. The county has a rich history and heritage with castles, abbeys, ancient burial grounds and interpretive centres for those wishing to delve into its past. Donegal is well known for traditional music and this takes place in pubs and villages throughout the county. Arts and music festivals abound, particularly during the summer months. Donegal hand–woven tweed is famous all over the world and is available for sale in the many craft and woollen shops around the county. County Donegal boasts some of the best golf courses in Ireland. In addition the area's terrain presents breathtaking routes for hill–walking, cycling and horse–riding. Water sports enthusiasts are in their element, from surfing at Rossnowlagh to white water rafting down the River Finn, while anglers have a choice of sea or river fishing in numerous locations. Tory Island is accessible from Bunbeg and Magheraroarty. The island is famous for its school of painters, the Tory Island School, who have been widely acclaimed both inside and outside the country. Tory has a long history and the Tau Cross and round tower near West Town are reputed to date back to a 6th century settlement established by St. Colmcille. |
